Following a ten-year industrial and academic experience in United States, Canada and overseas Fred F. Afagh joined Carleton University in 1987 as an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He became a full Professor in 1997. Fred Afagh has served in numerous capacities during his time at Carleton, including roles as Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Director of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Engineering and Design. In November 2016, he was appointed as Dean (Interim) for the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Afagh is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario. His area of expertise is structural mechanics, stability and dynamics. He is the author of more than 70 publications, conference proceedings and technical reports in the areas of structural dynamics, stability, intelligent structures and vibrations. He is also co-author and technical editor of three books on stability theory and structural control. In 2000-2001 he was a Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Structural Mechanics in German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Braunschweig, Germany. He is a member and senior member of a number of professional and scientific institutes and societies.
