Dr. Haruo Sugi graduated from postgraduate school in the University of Tokyo with the degree of Ph.D. in 1962, and appointed to be an instructor in physiology in the University of Tokyo Medical School. From 1965 to 1967, He worked in the Columbia University as a research associate, and in the National Institutes of Health as a visiting scientist. In 1973, Sugi became Professor and Chairman in the Department of Physiology, Teikyo University Medical School until 2004, when he became Emeritus Professor. He was Chairman of Muscle Commission in the International Union of Physiological Sciences from 1995 to 2005.
