Marcos A. Pimenta was a professor in the Department of Physics at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) from 1989 to 2020. In 1992 he created the Raman spectroscopy laboratory at UFMG and shortly afterwards introduced the research topics for carbon nanotubes and graphene at this university. He is currently researcher 1A at CNPq and the coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) of Carbon Nanomaterials. He was the director of the Center for Technology in Nanomaterials and Graphene (CTNano) at UFMG from 2010 to 2020. He is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and of "The World Academy of Sciences" (TWAS). He received the following distinctions: Somyia award 2009 from IUMRS (International Union of Materials Research Society), 2013 Prize in Physics of "The World Academy of Sciences" (TWAS) 2013; Commander (in 2010) and Gran Cruz (in 2018) of the National Order of Scientific Merit. Between 2017 and 2019 he was president of the Brazilian Physics Society.
