Abstract

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is beset with numerous problems. In addition to the fact that clinicians, policy makers, patients, and third party payers have each customarily sought differing types of evidence, EBM itself has traditionally incorporated a hierarchy of clinical research designs, placing systematic reviews and meta-analyses at the pinnacle as presumably the most accurate studies predicting clinical outcomes. Yet the canonical pyramid of EBM excludes numerous sources of research information, such as basic research, epidemiology, and health services research. Furthermore, models of EBM commonly used by third party payers have ignored clinical judgment and patient values and expectations, which together form a tripartite guideline to effective clinical care and which need to be incorporated into the more progressive models of EBM. Furthermore, poor systematic reviews which comprise a significant portion of EBM are prone to subjective bias in its inclusion criteria and methodological scoring which have been shown to skew outcomes to such an extent that diametrically opposing results can be obtained—depending upon which scoring criteria are employed. Finally, the blinding concept which lies at the heart of randomized controlled trials, designed for allopathic medicine, is particularly problematic in all applications of physical medicine. Examples are drawn from the research literature in physical medicine to highlight conclusions which are open to debate rather than definitive statements as claimed. For these reasons, more balanced palettes of components comprising EBM are recommended, together with greater recognition of the varying audiences that might be employing EBM.

Anthony Rosner is a champion of interdisciplinary research methodology in the health sciences, having previously served as Director of Research and Education at the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research, Director of Research at the International College of Applied Kinesiology, Director of Research Initiatives at Parker University, Research Operations Manager at Harvard teaching hospitals, Department Administrator at Brandeis University, and Technical Director of clinical chemistry laboratories at Harvard’s Beth Israel Hospital and an affiliate of the Mayo Clinic. He was designated as Humanitarian of the Year in 2000 by the American Chiropractic Association and holds an honorary degree from the National University of Health Sciences. He obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard in Medical Sciences/Biochemistry, having recently served as a Research Director at Apex Energetics, Inc.

Abstract

In the current age we understand that information is senior to matter and energy. Information encodes matter and energy. The old idea that information needs a matrix (such as a book, brain or computer) is obsolete.
Keith Scott-Mumby will bring forth three separate proofs that information in biological systems and chemical substances (therefore in drugs and remedies) needs no material presence.
The first proof is the phenomenon of cyclotron resonance (CR), in which a variable signal in a fixed magnetic field (in this case the Earth’s geomagnetic field) can convey the signature therapeutic properties of a substance such as lithium (exceptional proof from a US Naval science laboratory, in which no lithium was present, but the pharmacological effect via CR was demonstrated).
The second proof is from homeopathy where substances have a biological effect (very strong evidence for this), despite no actual molecules of the opriginal substance being present. Even homeopaths do not argue that beyond the Avogadro number than can be no physical substance present. But information is still carried (as in the “memory of water”).
The third proof is the demonatrsation by Jacques Benveniste and Nobel-laureate Luc Montagnier that the ecltromagnetic encoding of information signals at homeopathic levels has a demonstrable biological effect. Such electromagnetic “signatures” of substances have been sent across the internet and decoded locally, no physical substance being present.
This marks a new era which Keith has christened “Medicine Beyond” (beyond physics). He has written a book of that title.

Keith Scott-Mumby obtained his medical qualifications first in the UK (MB ChB), then an international MD. He is a certified doctor of homepathic medicine in the state of Nevada (HMD) and board-certified in chelation from the American College For The Advancement of Medicine. His doctorate thesis (Colombo) was an investigation of the non-material nature of substances. He is author of over 20 books on holistic health, one-time associate professor of psychiatry at the former Capital University of Intergative Medicine and a member of the Nevada Homeopathic licensing Board.

Abstract

Introduction: Neural therapy, or therapeutic local anesthesia (TLA), is the diagnostic and therapeutic use of local anesthetics. This review summarizes the scientific and clinical evidence, indications, methods of application, and possible future research. In the literature, there is a gap between the multitude of data supporting a number of different molecular effects and the few clinical trials that are available. The available clinical studies and case reports, however, show effectiveness in acute and chronic pain, functional disorders, vegetative diseases such as the complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and chronic inflammation.
Method: Five administration methods are described: local, segmental, regional, and systemic application, as well as injections into the so called “stoerfeld” (disturbance field, interference field). In our practice we discuss usage in a specific law back pain with more than 200 patients.
Conclusion and Discussion: Local anesthetics have been used for therapy for over 120 years, which suggests that this therapy may be an important, effective, and efficient therapy that has few side effects. Possible clinical studies to reveal the potential effectiveness and benefit-risk ratio of this holistic approach are described.

Hegyi Gabriella is Medical Doctor, with specialization of internal medicine, working medicine and rehabilitation, she completed his Ph.D. in medical Sciences at the University of St. Stephan, Budapest, Hungary . He went on to establish and lead the efforts of Yamamoto rehabilitation Institute in Budapest in 1989 where eastern and western medicine joints. She is the member of advisory board of health Ministry since 1997, organizes the TCM, neuraltherapy and Cam courses at University for medical doctors since 1986. For the past 16 years, he has been the President of Hungarian Biophysical Association, President of Hungarian Medical Acupuncture Association, researcher of CAMbrella, the Paneuropean CAM Project, researcher of NATO CAM Project, establish person of TCM Confucius Institute of Pecs University in 2015. She is the author on more than 250 papers, more books. She has been an Editorial Board Member of 6 professional medical journals in last years.

Abstract

This research elucidates the question of whether common and widespread dental procedures (DP) like root filling (RF) and the removal of wisdom teeth (WT) contribute to chronic inflammation in the jawbone. Dentists, in carrying out these DP, can set off defective wound healing in the jawbone in ignorance of its connection to inflammatory mediators and the possibility of it being a hidden cause of chronic systemic diseases (SYD). We examined samples of jawbone for seven cytokines by multiplex analysis in three groups of jawbone areas. In order to clarify systemic interrelations, specimens from 16 patients were analyzed in areas of former surgery in the retromolar wisdom tooth area; specimens from 16 patients were analyzed in the jawbone, apically of teeth with RF; and specimens from 19 patients were of healthy jawbone. Each of the retromolar and the apical jawbone samples showed clinically fatty degenerated and osteonecrotic medullary changes. All fatty necrotic and osteolytic jawbone (FDOJ) samples showed RANTES and fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2 as the only extremely overexpressed cytokines. FDOJ cohorts showed a 30-fold mean overexpression of RANTES and a 20-fold overexpressed level of FGF-2 when compared to healthy controls. As RANTES is discussed in the literature as a possible contributor to inflammatory diseases, and though it might have oncogenic effects, we hypothesize that FDOJ in areas of improper and incomplete wound healing in the jawbone might act as hyperactivated signaling pathways, while serving as an unknown source of “silent inflammation”. Because of the wide range of RANTES in immune diseases treating FDOJ can cover many potential prediction or prognosis of individual outcomes.

Johann Lechner (PhD), Dentist and Naturopath.
Head of the Clinic for Integrative Dentistry in Munich, Germany since 1980. Member of executive board of DAH (German Association for Research on Disturbance Fields and Regulation) and since 1982 chairman of GZM (International Society for Holistic Dentistry). Lechner published numerous articles and hitherto nine books in German about Holistic Dentistry and Integrative Medicine. Lechner’s researches focus on silent inflammation in jawbone and the implication to systemic diseases. Further research suggest a critical attitude towards the use of X-rays as a sole imaging diagnostic tool for chronic inflammatory process in jawbone and for depicting “silent inflammation” in jawbone. 2010, 2013 ,2014 and 2015 six PubMed indexed scientific papers discussing immune messengers and hyperactivated signaling pathways by RANTES/CCL5 in jawbone and systemic interference have been accepted for publication. These studies done by Lechner are the first ones worldwide and contribute to generate the new field of Maxillo-Mandibular Osteoimmunology.

Abstract

Our automatic, vegetative and individual reactions of our gastrointestinal tract lead to maldigestion of all mucous membranes. For the intestine this topic is well known as leaky gut syndrom. From the therapeutic view, it`s helpful to mention that all mucous membranes stem from the same embryo tissue layer. At the orifices skin turns into mucous membranes. Sinusitis, allergy and food intolerance marching in step. Stomach, liver, gall bladder etc. are also integrated in this vegetative system. The interaction of first and second brain is the clou.
Every trauma comes from outside to the skin, from inside via mucous membranes or via cerebral nerves into us. Our brain belly perceives and reacts instinctively with empirical values of our brain, especially after disagreeable experiences. With somatic, mental and emotional techniques these reaction patterns can be released.

Ulrike Aldag has completed her approbation from Free University of Berlin, Germany and got the specialization of surgery, natural therapist and homoeopathy from the Ärztekammer Berlin, Germany. Her research interests include regulation of inflammation and inflammation related disorders concerning the vegetative nerve system. Her studies focuses the psycho-somatical connections between organs, mental, emotional state and the ANS on the basis of psycho-neuro-immunology. She is the head of the education center Institut für Neuraltherapie in Berlin, Germany. As a member of several naturopathy and neural therapy associations she teached at naturopathy congresses AEN Berlin ZAEN Freudenstadt and EHK, MW Baden Baden, Germany. On a para-university level she set up Neural Therapy organizations in Hungary, Turkey and US.

Abstract

Introduction: Stress (S), sport (SP), sport stress (SSP) and adaptogens (AD) represent subjects of research interest, but the rol of AD in S/ SP/ SSP is, yet, modest investigated.
Method: A. PubMed-publications. S/ SP/ SSP - AD investigations, such as: A) Comparative analysis for the keywords combinations: S-AD, SP-AD, SSP-AD, Anxiety AND AD (A-AD), Cortisol AND AD (C-AD), fatigue and AD (F-AD), performance AND AD (P-AD); B) Analysis for filters, with their sub-filters: Species - human (H), other animals (An); Sex - male (M) female (F); and Ages. C) Exemplifying for the main adaptogens: Rhodiola Rosea (RR), Schisandra Chinensis (SC), Panax Ginseng (PG). B. Personal research on S-AD/RR/SC/PG, SP-AD/RR/SC/PG, SSP-AD/RR/SC/PG.
Results: A. PubMed-publications. Among the analyzed results are: average of the number of publications per year, for the selected keywords and sub-filters; percentage of publications related to S-AD/RR/SC/PG, SP-AD/RR/SC/PG, SSP-AD/RR/SC/PG; species, genre and ages prevailing in the studies. B. Personal research analysis focuses on presenting the AD modulating effects on the physical exercise effort.
Conclusions: 1) PubMed studies on the role of AD in S/ Sp/ SSP are still low, but their number is steadily increasing in recent years. 2) Studies have been conducted on both animals and human subjects, of both sexes and of different ages, predominantly adults. 3) Anxiety and cortisol, important stress markers, and fatigue and performance, important parameters in sports, are found in most studies referring to S/ SP/ SSP and AD. 4) Personal research results are, for the most part, consistent with PubMed literature.

Abstract

Traditional Chinese Life Sciences are based on fundamental theoretical concepts. One of the most well-known is the concept of Qi, the Chinese character of which can hardly be translated because of its multiple meanings depending upon its context. Commonly translated as “energy” in western languages, the concept of Qi has a long history of development in China. It has many different meanings beginning with its archaic meaning, “vapour over rice”, to ultramodern interpretations such as “informational wave motion producing ordering effect” (Beijing 1992).
Due to the fact that nearly every Traditional Chinese Life Science refers to Qi, analyzes its quality and tries to deal with it or manipulate it, every change in the definition of Qi will also effect the content of Traditional Chinese Life Sciences.
Beginning with the first literal sources about Qi (around 1200 BC) we find a parallel process of development between the conception of Qi and the theories of Traditional Chinese Life Sciences such as Chinese longevity techniques and classical Chinese medicine.
This speech will present the history of the concept of Qi with reference to the Traditional Chinese Life Sciences in general, and the medicals arts and longevity techniques in particular.

Manfred Kubny is a German Sinologist and specialized into the Traditional Chinese Life Sciences. His interest is focused on all theories, concepts, practices and the history of the physical and mental preservation of the human being and its strategies to cope with life experiences and destiny. His fields of interest and education are covering History of Medicine, Health Pedagogics, Medical Anthropology and Psychotherapy. He studied also Daoist longevity techniques like Qigong 氣功 and Taiji Quan 太極拳. and is an expert for the reality analysis Qimen Dunjia 奇門遁甲 „The Mystic Gates and the Hidden Shield“. Abstract

The present study was conducted on 60 clinically diagnosed and confirmed patients of Dyslipidemia (Medoroga). Patients having C.A.D. with specific conditions were not registered. The study was conducted with an objective of evaluating the role of Cap. Cardicap & Lekhana Basti in the management of Dyslipidemia (Medoroga) on various scientific parameters.
Out of the three groups 20 patients were administered Tab. Atorvastatin 10 mg H.S. for one month, 20 patients of second group were administered Cap. Cardicap 500 mg (two capsules) BD for one month with Yavambhasa (Barley Water) as anupana and 20 patients were administered Lekhana Basti (for 15 days) along with Cap. Cardicap 500 mg (two capsules) BD for one month with Yavambhasa (Barley Water) as anupana.
During present trial it was observed that there was significant improvement in clinical manifestations of Dyslipidemia after the therapy with Cap. Cardicap & Lekhana Basti. The level of S. Cholesterol, L.D.L., V.L.D.L. and Serum Triglycerides decreased considerably after the therapy. Cap. Cardicap & Lekhana Basti possesses potent Antianginal and Cardio protective activities and it can be used effectively in the management/to slow down the progress of pathogenesis of atherosclerosis leading to Dyslipidemia (Medoroga) which may further lead to Coronary Heart Disease (Hridroga).

Abstract

‘Mate’ is the folk name of the herb extracted from the tree Ilex paraguariensis. ‘Mate’ consumption is a staple habit in temperate South America. According to International Agency for Research on Cancer, hot ‘mate’ drinking was considered as a 2A agent (probably carcinogenic for humans). Nevertheless, it appears within a long list of products which have priority to be reassessed by the IARC, since basic research has demonstrated the presence of several antioxidant compounds (polyphenols, flavonoids), among other ones as chlorogenic acids and methylxantines. We have published the first epidemiologic articles on ‘mate’ infusion in breast (BC) and colorectal cancer (CRC). A high intake was inversely associated with BC risk (OR=0.40, ptrend <0.001). Stratified analyses also displayed strong inverse associations for ‘mate’ in high tea drinkers (OR=0.22). Another study showed that a high ‘mate’ intake was inversely associated with BC risk, independently of dietary antioxidants’ (carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonols, glutathione) levels. Inverse associations found between ‘mate’ intake and BC risk, regarding reproductive risk factors, led us to propose that intense intake could strongly display its anti-estrogenic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities within a high estrogenic environment. Regarding CRC risk, tea intake displayed significant, inverse associations, mainly among men (OR=0.54). ‘Mate’ intake showed a significant inverse association among women (OR=0.50), marginally heterogeneous between sexes (p=0.07). Its hormonal action led us to think a potential role in prevention. Further studies are needed in order to better know about ‘mate’ intake and its hormonal and red-ox associations.

Alvaro Ronco graduated in 1986 as M.D. from UDELAR, the Public State University of Uruguay. He has been working on nutritional epidemiology of cancer, mainly focusing on breast cancer. Ronco is author/coauthor of 140 peer-reviewed articles published in specialized journals and is the principal author of ‘Nutritional Epidemiology of Breast Cancer’ (Springer Publ., Dordrecht 2012), the first book published on this subject. Ronco is Associate Professor of Cancer Epidemiology at the CLAEH School of Medicine in Uruguay. He was distinguished in 2016 by the AACR as one of the 12 key Latin American researchers in cancer.

Abstract

No two children with ASD are alike and no single care plan is one-size-fits-all. In this respect, studies have shown that a majority of ASD children display gastrointestinal symptoms, which impacts neurodevelopment during early childhood in susceptible subjects by way of gut-brain axis. Thus, we performed an uncontrolled pilot study to assess the efficacy of Integrative Medicine (IM) approach, based on specific carbohydrate diet-diary free diet, biomedical, lifestyle, behavioral, music and sand art intervention, to caring five children, ages 4-6, diagnosed with an ASD with gastrointestinal symptoms for 12 weeks. All completed a 3-day washout period with Dietary Guideline for Chinese resident. All Parents were signed informed consent forms. Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Sensory Integration (SI) functional Checklist, and SI clinical observation were implemented to gather baseline, 4, 8 and 12 weeks data. Diet and stool diary were daily recorded for 12 weeks. Fecal, urine and blood sample were collected by 0, 8, and 12 weeks for analysis. There was a significant decrease CARS score and increase in SI functional score (p<0.05) from baseline to week12. Also, it was found a statistically significant increase in intestinal microbial diversity from baseline to week 8. Blood lead and mercury level were found a significant decrease compared baseline to week12 (p<0.05). However, applied IM approach to caring ASD improves in constipation, bloating, social behavior, eye contact, communication, and decreases in anxiety, stereotyped behavior, and aggressiveness. Further research is needed, including a suitable control group, to promote the IM approach to caring ASD.

Abstract

Homeopathy is the system of medicine which works on the principle of Similia Similibus curanter. The system of holistic healing was founded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician; who was translating the book on the medicinal properties of drugs, was reading the properties of the medicine Cinchona, when he read that Cinchona cures malaria, because of its bitter taste. Hahnemann was surprised by this statement and when he read on, he found a footnote which said that cinchona poisoning leads to malaria-like symptoms.
He conducted experiment on himself and then on other healthy individuals and established this system on the basis of the principle Like cures Like. The substance which can produce certain symptoms in healthy individual can also cure similar conditions.
With homeopathic medicines we energies the Vital force, the superior controller of our body and mind. So when immune system or vital force is disturbed we are struck by some and other derangements. When it is in a perfect order, it can fight back with every disease. So the goal of homeopathic treatment is to stimulate the body to heal, to find a new balance in which energy is available to heal, with no negative side effects.

Abstract

Human placental extract has been used to treat fatigue, post-menopausal symptoms, wound-healing, and growth retardation in Korea. Combined with acupuncture therapy, placental extract extends its therapeutic limit to pain control. Recently, we have reported acupuncture point injection (API) with placental extract modulated inflammation-involving pain symptoms in chronic pain diseases. The origin of all pain is inflammation and the inflammatory response. API with placental extract provides therapeutic effects by anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects on injured or degenerative tissues. We describe treatment methodology of API with placental extract in pain syndromes focusing on pain relief and joint mobilization. In order to rehabilitate patients suffering from chronic pain and restricted joint mobility, placental extract was injected into acupuncture points localized on the joints, surrounding muscles acting in concert with the joints, and paravertebral muscles affecting the innervation of the joints. Here, the results of API with placental extract on shoulder pain, knee arthritis, and complex regional pain syndrome are also explained.

Abstract

Globally, 4.5 million stillbirths occur per year, and 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss, leaving several million women’s lives changed forever. Most of these women suffer from serious depression and anxiety, as well as constant grief. The conventional treatments for depression associated with babyloss (a type of MDD) are pharmacological remedies and standard psychotherapy, yet neither approach is very effective, and both are quite expensive, costing businesses, insurance companies, and governments countless billions every year. Many drug therapies, the most common treatment, can lead to serious negative side effects for the grieving mothers, without ever really addressing the underlying causes of the problem. Some pharmaceuticals, for instance, cause suicidal thoughts, reckless behavior, addiction, poor work and school performance, relationship problems, and physical ailments. In the most conservative cost- benefit analysis, it is clear that such CAM treatments as acupuncture provide safer, more effective, and less expensive therapies for women suffering from babyloss. Thus, when seeking the best and most affordable treatment, doctors and mental-health professionals should recommend acupuncture as the first main therapy for these women, instead of prescription drugs or psychotherapy. Acupuncture, particularly the stimulation of auricular NADA points and points on the scalp and body, helps grieving mothers get at the root of their depression, the imbalances caused by grief. In fact, the Acupuncture Evidence Project (2017) found that acupuncture had a larger impact on reducing depression and anxiety than conventional treatments, with over twice the reduction in symptoms. Acupuncture does help grieving mothers heal, and it is the most effective and economically justifiable substitute for conventional MDD therapies in women.

Abstract

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum L.) is one of the oldest traditional medicinal plants. Fenugreek belongs to the family of Leguminosae and is used as an herb or spice. This study aims to evaluate the side effects germinated seeds of fenugreek in fetal development and evaluation of locomotive development. An aqueous extract of sprouted fenugreek seeds is administered to mated female mice throughout pregnancy at doses of 200, 500, 800, 1000 mg/kg/day. The fetuses have been weighed and their behavior is evaluated. In pregnant mice, there were no obvious symptoms of toxicity, deaths related to the aqueous extract of sprouted fenugreek seeds. The progeny of the mice includes an increase in the body weight of the fetus and a reduction in their motor coordination. This study suggests that prenatal mouse exposure to high doses of aqueous extract of germinated fenugreek seeds may lead to toxic effects on mouse reproduction as well as impaired neurobehavioral performance in fetuses.

Abstract

Compared to conventional western medicine based on anatomy and chemistry particles, traditional Chinese medicine physicians practice clinic following “Chi”.
What is “Chi”? After 25 years study of Pulse Diagnosis, we defined it as Wave or Periodic signal. Under this definition, we could recognize the reality of meridians or harmonics between time and frequency domain phenomenon with Fourier Transform. Moreover, we could discover the basis of Chinese Medicine based on the mathematics and physics of meridian.
With second harmonic generation law and the energy conservation law on meridians, we proved the core mathematic property and philosophy of the Chinese “Five elements theorem”.
From the balance of the forces on the artery wall by Newton’s Law of mechanics, we derived the “Radial resonance equation” to describe the physical property of the blood pressure wave propagation and transmission in the arteries. Meanwhile, “Radial resonance theorem” explains the physiology of circulation system and builds up the basis of Pulse diagnosis on meridians.
Through the pulse diagnostic apparatus, we could map the meridians to harmonics and quantitatively analyze the pathological excess or deficiency of the meridians including the five zang-organs and six fu organs of the patient (pathological matrix). In addition, a series of pharmacology research analyses of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, herbs prescription formula and western drugs on the reinforcing or reducing effect of meridians were being carried out.
On the other hand, with matrix operation on harmonics, we were able to simulate the whole make up meridian function of a prescription formula which is composed of several herbs (pharmacological matrix).
In clinic, we found that the pathological indicator on meridians-H.C.V. (Coefficient of Variations of Harmonics Magnitude) could quantitatively reflect the severity of diseases and evaluate the outcome of patients. From health to death, life struggles between convergence and divergent of negative entropy revealed by the H.C.V. of meridian.
Combining the H.C.V., the pathological and pharmacological inverse matrixes, we developed an algorithm for the AI system to give prescription following the Chinese Medicine Bible: Shang Han Za Bing Lun, such as the white tiger and green dragon formulae. This is also the basis to give acupuncture or laser acupuncture prescription.
With meridian theory, we discovered a series of compounds from Cnidii Fructus(蛇床子) which is a simplest herb formulae described in Shang Han Za Bing Lun. Including BMX, these compounds have being identified as HDAC8 inhibitor. Meanwhile, we developed these compounds guided by the meridian effect on liver and gallbladder which dominate the blood perfusion of brain recorded in Chinese Medicine classic literature. As we expected, BMX passes through BBB (blood brain barrier) in our study. These results provide confidence to us for brain cancer therapy and star the phase 1 clinic trial under US-FDA approval. As light, life and medicine owns the duality of particle and wave. We should investigate both sides. Meridian links each other.

Abstract

Background - The EDUCAM School of Osteopathy, following the earthquake occurred in Amatrice-Italy on August 24th 2016, promoted the project “Una mano per la salute” [One hand for health], in which a pilot study was carried out to check whether and how a protocol of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) might play a clinically relevant role in the management of subjects exposed to extraordinary exogenous stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevention.
Methods - Twenty subjects who had suffered the earthquake volunteered to this study. All showed symptomatic patterns partially superimposable on that of PTSD. During the study, each subject received a cycle of four OMT: the first (T0) at the beginning of the study, the second (T1) after 15 days, the third (T2) at 20 days and the fourth (T3) at 15 days, for a total of 2 months. The OMT protocol consists of ten techniques directed to the main myofascial structures connected to the central tendon, with anti-inflammatory and anti-painful purposes by re-balancing the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. The effectiveness of OMT has been monitored through humanistic/participatory outcomes, such as the Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire for measuring the perceived quality of life (QoL) and the Psychological General Well-Being Index (PGWBI) quantifying the psychological well-being. Both scales were given before the first treatment, and at the end of the other three treatments. The Student T-test for paired samples was performed in T0-T1, T1-T2, T2-T3 and T0-T3 intervals.
Results - The results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation and significance was set at 5% (p <0.05, two-tailed). This study highlighted that the sample of subjects responded to the OMT with an increase in perceived QoL of 44% and an improvement of the overall psychological state of 32%. The linear regression line values SF36 with r = 0.472 and PGWBI with r = 0.615- show the progressive course of the overall improvement and a gradual homogenization of the sample, demonstrating the correlation between the emotional and the somatic spheres.
Conclusions - These preliminary findings suggest how OMT can contribute to the management of stress and the prevention of PTSD in victims of environmental traumas, reducing costs and recovery times.

Introduction: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis are predisposed to developing chronic leg ulcers. These ulcers must be treated as early as possible as it is substantial regarding the fate of the patient specially in spectrum of that most of treated ulcers for a long time with conventional treatment have little if any signs of healing. Honey as a natural, widely available product had been investigated with promising results as an effective factor with many benefits in promoting healing of various wounds & ulcers. Meanwhile many studies were conducted on cupping as healing measures used in many cultures & still used, enhancing blood supply to the affected area & removing exudates to prepare the wound for sound healing.
Materials and Methods: In this prospective study, patients with rheumatoid arthritis leg ulcers refractory to conventional therapies were treated with cupping & honey application for three months until either healing or failure of treatment was achieved.
Results: 93.3% of ulcers showed signs of healing while failure of treatment was observed in only 6.7% of ulcers that needed surgical intervention.
Conclusion: Honey combined with cupping suction had considerable therapeutic effects on leg ulcers in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Abstract

Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs) have been being the treasure of the Chinese nation, and they are extremely valuable for human to fight with diverse diseases all over the world. Research on the chemical constituents of TCMs is vital for understanding the function of TCMs, and the studies on the biological activities of these natural compounds is the first step to explore the functional components of TCMs. As the important biological sources, TCMs have been considered as an invaluable resource of new lead compounds, and it is promising to explore bioactive natural compounds and the lead compounds from TCMs. In recent years, our group focused on the discovery of bioactive natural compounds from the TCMs collected in Western China. Guided by the high-content screening and LC-MS/MS methods, we have systematically studied the chemical constituents and their biological activities of Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Zanthoxylum bungeanum, Aconitum pendulum, and Lycium barbarum. As results, thousands of terpenoids and their glycosides with diverse carbon skeletons and bioactivities have been isolated and evaluated for their anticancer, anti-diabetic, anti-AD, and anti-hypoxia activities. These materials and data have been applied for the quality control, function evaluation, and lead compounds discovery of the above TCMs.

Abstract

There is increasing evidences that favor the prenatal beginning of schizophrenia. These evidences point toward intra-uterine environmental factors that act specifically during the second pregnancy trimester producing a direct damage of the brain of the fetus [1]. The current available technology doesn't allow observing what is happening at cellular level since the human brain is not exposed to a direct analysis in that stage of the life in subjects at high risk of developing schizophrenia. Methods. In 1977 we began a direct electron microscopic research of the brain of fetuses at high risk from schizophrenic mothers in order to finding differences at cellular level in relation to controls. Results. In these studies we have observed within the nuclei of neurons the presence of complete and incomplete viral particles that reacted in positive form with antibodies to herpes simplex hominis type I [HSV1] virus, and mitochondria alterations [2]. Conclusion. The importance of these findings can have practical applications in the prevention of the illness keeping in mind its direct relation to the aetiology and physiopathology of schizophrenia. A study of the gametes or the amniotic fluid cells in women at risk of having a schizophrenic offspring is considered. Of being observed the same alterations that those observed previously in the cells of the brain of the studied foetuses, it would intend to these women in risk of having a schizophrenia descendant, previous information of the results, the voluntary medical interruption of the pregnancy or an early anti HSV1 viral treatment as preventive measure of the later development of the illness.

Abstract

Obesity is a global problem with high mortality and morbidity. The standard treatment for obesity involves reducing calorie intake and increasing energy consumption. The suppression of appetite with herbal medicines has become very popular in recent years. We conducted this systematic review to evaluate the scientific evidence available regarding herbal medicines that are typically used to suppress appetite by searching for related clinical trials. We retrieved the data from Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, Scientific Information Database, and IranMedex from January 1, 2013 to April 24, 2018. English and Persian randomized clinical trials that used herbal medicine to suppress appetite and enhance satiety in healthy or obese or overweight individuals. Methodological quality analysis of articles was carried out. Out of 590 articles, 25 trails have been included in our study. Three studies on the Meratrim formulation, ginger, and caraway in the long term and 6 studies on Yerba Mate, spinach, beans, rye, sorghum and psyllium showed short-term hopeful effects on suppressing appetite and enhancing satiety. Despite some methodological concerns in the reviewed studies, there is promising evidence for suppressing appetite with herbal medicine that needs to be proven in long-term clinical trials with high sample size and higher methodological quality with more attention to safety, effective dose and side effects.

Abstract

Mental health care systems, governments, and communities agree that food insecurity is a major issue for Indigenous people in Canada, with highest vulnerability for children and youth. Food insecurity is a complex issue tied to many social and health outcomes, including mental health. Youth account for over 25% of the overall Indigenous population in Canada are the fasted growing demographic of any group. Little research exists on the successes of Indigenous traditional knowledges in food insecurity and how these are related to concrete mental health outcomes, such as life transitions in education and employment. This study fills these literature gaps by using an Indigenous qualitative research methodology that employs a community-based framework to ask: What are the intersections of Indigenous knowledges, food insecurity, and life transition outcomes for Indigenous youth? Focus groups and individual interviews with Indigenous youth, traditional knowledge keepers (such as Elders and Healers), and key community informants are the main sources of data with participants in a large Canadian city. Goals of the research include mobilizing Indigenous traditional healing knowledge to improve health care system change by focusing on traditional knowledge related to food. Results and implications for health researchers and clinicians will be shared.

Abstract

The present study was conducted on 60 clinically diagnosed and confirmed patients of Dyslipidemia (Medoroga). Patients having C.A.D. with specific conditions were not registered. The study was conducted with an objective of evaluating the role of Cap. Cardicap & Lekhana Basti in the management of Dyslipidemia (Medoroga) on various scientific parameters.
Out of the three groups 20 patients were administered Tab. Atorvastatin 10 mg H.S. for one month, 20 patients of second group were administered Cap. Cardicap 500 mg (two capsules) BD for one month with Yavambhasa (Barley Water) as anupana and 20 patients were administered Lekhana Basti (for 15 days) along with Cap. Cardicap 500 mg (two capsules) BD for one month with Yavambhasa (Barley Water) as anupana.
During present trial it was observed that there was significant improvement in clinical manifestations of Dyslipidemia after the therapy with Cap. Cardicap & Lekhana Basti. The level of S. Cholesterol, L.D.L., V.L.D.L. and Serum Triglycerides decreased considerably after the therapy. Cap. Eating (also known as consuming) is the ingestion of food, typically to provide a heterotrophic organism with energy and to allow for growth. Hands are most vital for cooking sustenance and for eating. Many individuals find eating with hands unhygienic, primitive, and nauseating; however, eating food with hands is associated with not just the body but also the psyche and soul. There is rationality behind the Indian routine of eating with fingers. Different types of vessels are used as needed to set up the sustenance . In Indian families, distinctive leaves such as banana leaf and jerk teak leaf are used for serving food. While eating in abundance, one must use hands to feel the food. Eating with a spoon or fork is often the current practice and is considered clean and advantageous; however, the vast majority of people do not understand that there is reasoning behind eating sustenance with hands. Eating by sitting on the floor has multitudinous advantages and is yet to be popularized in different regions across Asia.

Sushruta's work remains as an evidence of the existence of the high attainment of this ancient Indian science of Surgery. Sushruta has described several concepts and theories including Cosmic Evolution, Rules of Genetics, Physiological and Pathological theories. He has also vividly narrated fundamental principles of management of diseases with Ayurvedic measures and medicines. But, the major contribution of Sushruta Samhita consists in the unique presentation of theoretical and practical knowledge of Surgery along with its governing principles. The presentation and the full text of paper will deal with the scientific explanation of individual fundamental principle which governs the science and skill of surgery in context to today's surgical explanation.

Subhash Raut has completed M.D (Ayu) from Institute for Post Graduate Teaching and Research, Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar, India. He served as faculty in Shalya Tantra (Surgery in Ayurveda) since 1989 in various capacities. He is presently working as Dean of Government Ayurveda College and Hospital, Nagpur. He has supervised 33 PG projects and 6 are currently under supervision. He is also recognized as PhD guide, currently with 4 PhD students under supervision. Abstract

Cryptolepis sanguinolenta (Cs) is a medicinal plant native to the West Africa sub-region, used in the treatment of malaria and more recently Lyme disease. In addition, it is widely recognized for its antimicrobial, antihyperglycemic, and anticancer potential. Cs grows in the wild and has been over-exploited because its root system contains the highest concentration of cryptolepine and is the desired raw material for the production of herbal decoctions. In Ghana, medicinal plant practitioners have used Cs to treat malaria for over fifty years, though its biology and genetics are widely unknown. Over the last seven years, our research group has focused on providing a better understanding of the cropping cycle, traditional and in vitro propagation methods, evaluating genetic diversity, and improved protocols for the domestication of Cs. Our research has determined that cryptolepine concentrations are the highest around nine months after planting and that antiplasmodial activity of domesticated plants increased as they aged. We also developed successful in vitro propagation protocols essential for its commercialization. Lastly, we developed species specific microsatellite loci to evaluate the genetic diversity and population structure of Cs in Ghana. Despite overharvesting of the existing, fragmented populations, our results indicated high levels of genetic diversity, high gene flow, low population structure, and limited differentiation. With a better understanding of the biology and genetics of this medicinal plant, we are now in the position to produce the needed supply of Cs seedlings for cultivation as a cash crop in Ghana to meet the local and international demand.

Introduction :WHO defines the XXI century as the century of allergy. This opinion is due to the fact that allergy is present on all inhabited continents, the number of people with allergies is increasing every year, the course of already known allergic diseases is getting worse, new diseases with allergic genesis are emerging. Allergy is recognized by experts as an incurable disease, a sentence: if you have an allergy, it is for the rest of your life.
Method : The fact of identifying a large number of mites from the skin of a patient with a Discoid Lupus Erythematosus I considered dangerous for the people around. Therefore, I began to carefully look at the skin of all those in contact with this patient. In that period of time (early 1970s), most people's skin was smooth and clean. By the time of the encountering with the described fact, I had established method of clinical observation of the skin of patients with chronic hepatitis. This circumstance has helped me to notice the smallest changes in the skin of healthy people after having contact with the described patient. By the time of the dissertation defense I had accumulated enough material that testified to the fact that Demodecosis is contagious and easily spread among the population. After defending my dissertation, I thoroughly rechecked the results of my previous six-year observations, including infecting myself with Demodecosis on August 10th, 1980. And only after that I announced to my colleagues the results of my unique observations. Before the competent Commission of the Ministry of Healthcare, I proved the absolute pathogenicity of Demodexes for humans: from the specific pathological elements of the skin, that I have indicated, all the inpatients and outpatients of the Republican Institute of Dermatovenerology selected by me had Demodexes at different stages of development. However, the management of the Institute of Dermatovenerology in response to the Medical Council of the Ministry of Healthcare stated that Demodex is a skin saprophyte of all people, and the results shown by me, were outlined in their articles, issued under the heading of "secret" and "for official use." As a result, they barred me from establishing of the Laboratory of Demodecosis and the opportunity to work as a Dermatologist or Allergist in the capital of the country. Leaving the work of a Senior Researcher, I was forced to move to the provincial town of Kentau, where I got a job as an Allergist and Dermatologist. The inclusion of elements of my know-how in the treatment of patients treated gave amazing results. Even more convinced of the accuracy of my observations, I moved back to the capital of the country. But it turned out that the management of the country's Ministry of Healthcare has completely changed and I had no choice but to get a job in a regional clinic. But I continued my clinical observations there. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, I opened the Medical Scientific Small Enterprise named Saule, where I provided assistance and care to patients with various allergic and dermatological diagnoses that were made before me. Basically, I was guided by clinical data, but if necessary, I conducted an acarological examination of patients and house dust mites of their home with the participation of an Acarologist Prof. V.N. Kusov and laboratory assistants. In the course of my research, I developed bloodless methods for diagnosing of Demodectic and Secondary Acariatic Allergy; a patent was obtained for methods for the treatment of Pollinosis and Year-round Allergic Rhinitis. According to the positive result of antidemodectic treatment and diagnoses of 43,198 patients who applied to me for medical care, many clinical masks of Demodecosis have become known, under which patients with Demodecosis are being observed and treated in medical institutions at the present time. There was no branch of clinical medicine where patients with clinical masks of Demodecosis would not be observed. Attached is 1/ a List of modern clinical masks of Demodecosis and 2/ My appeal to colleagues in 2016.
Conclusion : During the 45 years of independent research I have received the following information: 1/ Under natural conditions, people with healthy skin are infected by patients with Demodecosis. 2/ The most frequent manifestations and complications of Demodecosis are allergy and skin diseases. 3/ A massively spread allergy turned out to be a manifestation or a complication of Acariasis, first of all, Demodecosis, secondly, Dermatophagoidosis, and in the third, an atypical version of classical scabies caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. Other house dust mites are extremely rare cause acariasis, but have already begun to take part in the occurrence of the corresponding variant of Acariasis.

Abstract

The Annona muricata was the subject of several studies for its anticancer activity, effect assigned to acetogenins, compounds which are chemically classified as lipids, exclusively present in the Annonaceae family. Our study focuses on the evaluation of the subacute toxicity of Annona muricata. Whose main axis is an antitumor activity of Annona muricata using tumor mouse model P815. The study of acute and sub-acute toxicity showed that the plant has a low toxicity potential because the lethal dose 50 is less than 2.5 g / kg, the administration of the drug at a dose of up to 2000 mg / kg caused no apparent toxic effects except for the weight loss in relation to its hypoglecymiant activity. The study of anti-tumor activity has shown that the stems and leaves sprayed Graviola orally administered to DBA2 mice at a dose of 100 mg / kg for 20 days. The aqueous solution of whole plant showed a decreasing of the size and weight of tumors, limiting metastasis and reducing mortality.

Abstract

Venom therapy, as complementary and alternative medicine approach, has been used for thousands of years to treat inflammation, pain and arthritis in folk medicine. In recent years, various components have been used for drug development such as α-cobrotoxin, Alfimeprase, Cenderitide, Crotalphine derived from different snakes venom are in clinical trials for reliving chronic inflammation, pain & heart diseases. A well-known antihypertensive drug Captopril was isolated from the venom of Bothrops jararaca a South American snake. Pakistan cobra (Naja oxiana) belongs to lethal family of snakes. Neurotoxin I & II are considered as the main substance of cobra venom which is responsible to modulate the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR). Some peptides of therapeutic value have been identified from this cobra venom such as cytotoxin I & II having anticancer activity. Based on these evidences, in current study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory action of Naja oxiana venom on rodent model of inflammation.
The anti-inflammatory property of native Naja oxiana venom was determined at (0.018µg) followed by measurement of inflammatory mediators ([tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukins IL-1 and -6]) using carrageenan induced peritonitis via ELISA and ROS Levels by 2′, 7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) dye method. The Naja oxiana venom suppressed the IL-6 & ROS levels ̴ 18% comparable to Diclofenac Sodium (25mg) & there was 0% mortality rate observed.
In conclusion, Naja oxiana venom have potency to reduce the inflammation by attenuating of inflammatory cytokines, therefore, it needs to be further investigate for their toxicity profile and its anti-inflammatory effects at cellular and molecular level. Further studies are also in process to isolate its purified form which may play important role in development of new anti-inflammatory drug.

Abstract

Bombys batryticatus is one of the most commonly used herbals in Chinese Traditional Medicine, which is a special cmplex of insect and fungus but not plants as the most herbals usually be. The study evaluated the effects of B. batryticatus ethanol extract (BBE) on the viability and apoptosis of two human cancer cell lines (SMMC-7721 and SGC-7901) and to investigate its molecular mechanism. LC-MS was used to detect the related substances of BBE. 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, morphological assessment, DNA fragmentation assay, flow cytometry analysis, western blot analysis and real time -PCR analyses were used to investigate the anticancer activity of BBE. BBE induced the cancer cells apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner. IC50 for the BBE was 0.181mg/ml for SMMC-7721. Annexin-V/PI double-staining assay identified early and late apoptosis morphology. A typical cell apoptosis with increased DNA fragments was found in BBE treated cells. Transcription and protein expression levels of Bax and P21 were increased whereas the synthesis of Bcl-2 was decreased. The results suggested BBE has strong anticancer activity and provides a solid molecular base for developing new cancer treatment compounds from a natural insect product.

Abstract

Ethnozoology is the study of the past and present interrelationships between human beings and the animals in their environment. Zoo-therapy is an important component of ethnozoology, based medicines obtained from animals in healing of human ailments. This study investigates the domestic and wild harvested species used for medicinal purposes among the tribals of six tehsils of Udaipur district. The ethnozoological data were obtained by an emic approach, applying different tools such as semi-structured interviews, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions. The scientific name and species of animals were identified using relevant and standard literature. Present investigation is a part of major concept worked out for study on tribal people and their beliefs. Ethnozoological information was collected by interview of 150 tribals. The questionnaire was prepared in Hindi keeping all parameters in mind. A total of 150 respondents (100 males and 50 females) answered to the ethnomedical parameters. The collected data were analyzed through informant fidelity level (FL) and Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC) index. The present study was undertaken to have an insight of the ethnozoological uses of animals prevalent in Bhil, Meena, and Kathodi tribes inhabiting the Udaipur district of Rajasthan. The study recorded a total 25 species of animals (24 verterates species and 1 invertebrate species) which were used to treat 25 different ailments. The tribal people maintain strong ties with animals at both the material and spiritual level. Study reveals that traditional people depend on local therapies in absence of awareness, modern medical facilities, expensive drugs, and poor transportation. However, the use of animal material in such practices is on a decline.

Abstract

Opuntia dillenii (Nagphana) cladodes are edible and traditionally used against inflammation and also possess antinociceptive effects. Thus in the present study anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of O. dillenii cladodes extract, its fractions and α-pyrones (opuntiol and opuntioside) were evaluated.
The IC50 values of O. dillenii test agents derived from anti-inflammatory assay: arachidonic acid (AA) and 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced ear edema were used for detection of cytokines [tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukins IL-1 and -6] via ELISA. Among O. dillenii test agents opuntiol most effectively suppressed the TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 levels by ~50%, comparable to dexamethasone. In analgesic assays the acetic acid, formalin and hot plate-induced pain responses in mice were also reduced by O. dillenii test agents with opuntioside being most effective (~ IC50: 30 ± 1.0 mg/kg) and equipotent to diclofenac and indomethacin. In the presence of naloxone the extract and fractions induced analgesic effects were reversible while, the antinociceptive effect of opuntiol and opuntioside remained unchanged.
In conclusion, edible O. dillenii methanol extract, its fractions, opuntiol and opuntioside reduced acute inflammation by attenuating pro-inflammatory cytokines. It also exhibited both peripheral and centrally mediated pain relieving effects via opioid dependent and independent systems. Among O. dillenii test agents, opuntiol was most potent against cytokines and opuntioside emerged as most effective analgesic possibly due to the presence of –OH group in opuntiol and glucose moiety in opuntioside at position 7 of their α-pyrone rings. Thus opuntiol and opuntioside may serve as lead compounds in designing of new anti-inflammatory and analgesics.

Traditionally, Chinese physicians use fingertips to feel the wrist-pulses of patients in order to determine their health conditions. The qualitative theory of the Chinese pulse diagnosis is based on the experience of Chinese physicians for thousands of years. However, there are no quantitative theories to relate these different wrist-pulse wave-forms to the health conditions of patients. In this paper, new quantified classification indices have been introduced to interpret the Chinese pulse waveform patterns objectively. The new quantitative classification not only reduces the dependency of pulse diagnosis on Chinese physician’s experience, but also is able to interpret pathological wrist-pulse wave-forms more precisely.

Abstract

Hypertrophic scars formed after burns remain a challenge in clinical practice. We have previously reported that Shikonin induces apoptosis and reduces collagen production in hypertrophic scar fibroblasts in vitro and may therefore hold potential as a novel scar remediation therapy. In this study, we aimed to validate the potential of Shikonin on scar remediation in vivo. A novel porcine hypertrophic scar model was created after full-thickness burn wounds, and the effect of Shikonin on scar remediation was investigated. Clinical scar assessments, histology, and immunohistochemistry were used to evaluate scar appearance, morphology, and protein expression. Eight weeks after scar formation, clinical scar assessment indicated that the score of hypertrophic scars treated with Shikonin was significantly lower than that of the control group. Hypertrophic scars treated with Shikonin appeared flat, pink, and pliable. In addition, histological analysis indicated that hypertrophic scars treated with Shikonin exhibited reduced thickness of the epidermis and dermis, thin and even epithelial layers, reduced numbers of keratinocytes, uniform distribution of fibroblasts, and a parallel and loose arrangement of collagen fibers in the dermis. Moreover, immunohistochemical analysis indicated that Shikonin inhibited the expression of p63, cytokeratin 10, alpha-smooth muscle actin, transforming growth factor-beta 1, and collagen I, which play important roles in hypertrophic scar formation. Based on these results, we conclude that Shikonin has potential as a novel scar therapy. While our preclinical research (in vitro and in vivo) answered basic questions about Shikonin in scarring, it is unknown how it will interact with the human body. Proof-of-concept/validation trials in humans will be conducted to further validate the effects of Shikonin on human scar amelioration.

Reasons for the increase in the prevalence of asthma in India. According to the report, globally since 2015, India has the highest absolute number of deaths attributable to PM2.5. Together, these Asian countries accounted for 52 per cent of the total global PM 2.5 attributable deaths. This review aimed to investigate the self-educated-long term medicine differences in curing disabilities among asthma survivor. It is highlighted the on counter medicine of curing disabilities, and reviewed the gender differences on one hand has not seen, and explanation of theoretical background on the other hand gender had reported is not biomedical changes that seen in human body. Abstract

Malaria is a devastating parasitic disease causing around 214 million cases and 438,000 deaths worldwide in 2015. It might be attributed to a wide spread of drug resistance. Medicinal plants became a source of modern medicine starting long-time before. The plant Aloe megalacantha in Ethiopia were traditionally used the treatment of malaria. Hence, this study was aimed to evaluate the anti-malarial effect of leaves latex and isolates from Aloe megalacantha against Plasmodium berghei. Peters’ 4-day suppressive test method was used to test the antimalarial activity of both leaves latex and isolates. Three isolates were obtained using thin layer chromatography and were coded as AM1, AM2 and AM¬3 according to their ascending retention factor values. After treatment of Plasmodium berghei infected mice with leaves latex of Aloe megalacantha for four days at 100, 200 and 400mg/kg, it was shown 30.3%, 43.4% and 56.4% suppression of the parasite growth, respectively. 32.3%, 51.3% and 67.4% parasite chemosuppression after treatment with AM1 39.8%. 50.6% and 64.2% chemosuppression after treatment with AM2 and 52.6%, 69.4% and 79.6% chemosuppression after treatment with AM3 were observed at doses of 100, 200 and 400mg/kg/day, respectively, in Plasmodium berghei infected mice. The observed parasite suppression of leaves latex and isolates were statistically significant (P<0.05) as compared to negative control. Moreover, both the leaves latex and isolates were also observed to prevent body weight loss and hypothermia, and increased the survival time of infected mice. Hence, the present study supports the traditional use of the plant to fight against malaria.

Abstract

The present study was conducted in Delanta (Ethiopia) to examine the use of medicinal plants and investigate the impacts of the1984/85 resettlement program on the local people’s knowledge on herbal medicine and its uses. The research was conducted with72 informants in six study sites through semi-structured interviews, group discussion, and market survey. In this study, 133 species belonging to 116 genera and 57 families were documented. These plants were mentioned for uses in the treatment of about 76 human and livestock ailments. The family Asteraceae was represented by the highest number with 14 species. Herbs accounted for 52.6%of the total species and leaves (32.6%) were the most frequently used parts. The analysis showed that the resettlement program has both positive and negative impacts on nature rehabilitation and local knowledge along with many human induced threats. Most of the plant knowledge is held by traditional healers and permanent residents. The people’s preference for some medicinal plants gave indications of continuity of the ethnomedicinal information among the inhabitants. The findings inform that efforts need to be directed to in situ conservation in two of the plant community types which could protect a good proportion (about 50%) of the medicinal plant species

Abstract

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus and prediabetes has been increasing in young men worldwide, having a negative impact on male fertility. Diabetic and prediabetic patients can be subfertile/infertile due to altered Sertoli cells function, impaired spermatogenesis and poor sperm quality. In recent years, natural products, demonstrated promising antioxidant and antidiabetic properties. White tea (WTEA) presents a potent antioxidant potential due to its high catechin content, especially in epigallocatechin gallate; it is also rich in caffeine and L-theanine. Our aim was to unravel the effects of WTEA on male reproductive function and its protective role against reproductive dysfunctions induced by prediabetes. In vitro and ex vivo studies with Sertoli cells and spermatozoa, respectively, showed us the beneficial effects of a WTEA extract on Sertoli cells function (glucose metabolism, mitochondrial function and oxidative profile) and sperm quality. These studies also indicated that the combined effect of all WTEA components was much better than the single effect of caffeine, epigallocatechin gallate or L-theanine. Using a prediabetic rat model, we observed alterations in testicular and epididymal metabolism, which resulted in lower lactate content and poor sperm quality. WTEA ingestion by prediabetic rats for two months could restore most of the metabolic dysfunctions induced by the disease, resulting in the improvement of sperm motility and viability. Our results indicate that WTEA regular consumption can be a cost-effective strategy to improve prediabetes-induced reproductive dysfunctions, paving the way for WTEA to be used for the development of new antioxidant therapies for the improvement of male fertility.

Indigenous Food Security is achieved by accessing quality of food, in quantities required, available at local markets and with accessible prices for Indigenous peoples. This widely accepted concept includes several agents of the chain process of production, comercializtion and distribution as well as factors that shape historical, socio-economic, political and cultural determinants of health. From Indigenous ancestral perspectives, traditional systems of health, well-being and relationships beteween people, community, land, water, air and creatures are conceived as interdependent parts of single vital and protective network. Then health, food, medicine and cultural connections are dimensions of well-being for individuals and community. Indigenous ancestral food as a medicine is a holistic approach where individual and community health is de-colonized from dominant “instittutions”, health systems, health research and health interventions. Traditional food as medicine is an ancestral practice that was silenced by centuries of colonization, industrilization of agriculture, contamination of food sources, explotative systems of monetization of food as a comodity, modernization promises and the exclusive control of health through scientific medicines and institutions. Currently, social movements initated and lead by Indigenous peoples develop food systems and healing practices based on restoring ancestral knowledge and traditional lessons resolving unbalances caused by monodisciplinary and scientific approaches of health and healing. This presentation explores how traditional knowledge on food as medicine such as “Three Sisters Teachings”, individual health as community, seven teachings, four dimensions of human nature, challenge scientific knowledge and dominant medicine approaches to pain, diabetics, overweight, physical activity and cardiovascular disesases.

Currently he is Indigenous ethics of health research and food security systems as a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto. He is faculty member (status) at Dalla Lana School of Public Health and research-coordinator at the Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health. He holds a Master from University of Guelph, and an AbD in experimental psychology from Complutense University. Abstract

Cistus albidus L. (Cistaceae) is traditionally used to treat various inflammatory diseases. Hence, this study was designed to explore the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of this plant and to further elucidate its polyphenolic constituents using appropriate procedures. The nociceptive and anti-inflammatory actions were carried out using acetic acid-induced writhing and tail immersion tests, and carrageenan-induced paw edema, respectively. Changes in cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, as well as the role of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and the nuclear transcription factor kappa B (NF-kB) signaling pathways on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine peritoneal macrophages were analyzed by western blotting. HPLC with diode array detection coupled to tandem mass spectrometry detection with electrospray ionization (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS) was performed to determine the phytochemical profile of the extract.
Obtained results indicated significant anti-nociceptive activity both in the tail immersion (59.63% reduction at 120 min) and in the acetic acid (65.94% inhibition) tests at 100 mg/kg. The extract (50 mg/kg) exhibited a substantial reduction in paw edema (51.6%) and significantly inhibited nitrite generation (72.62%), without affecting cell viability of LPS-stimulated murine peritoneal macrophages. These results were concomitant with a down-regulation of the pro-inflammatory enzymes COX-2 and iNOS in extract-treated macrophages and a decrease in p38 MAPK phosphorylation. HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS analysis revealed that flavonols such as kaempferol and quercetin derivatives were potentially responsible for such effects. These results support the widespread use of C. albidus in popular medicine and indicate that this plant has therapeutic potential with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Thus, novel approaches against cancer are crucial for a better therapeutic outcome. Abstract

Medicinal plants like Ageratum conyzoïdes, Aloe vera, Cleome ciliata, Cymbopogon citratus, Eremomastax speciosa and Justicia secunda are being increasingly used though self-medication is a major public health challenge because of their numerous interactions. This study aimed to investigate the heavy metal contents in the organs (leaves, stems, roots) of selected medicinal plants, collected from environmentally diverse locations (roadsides, refuse dumps and residential areas of Douala (Cameroon) and to examine the human health risk associated with their consumption with reference to World Health Organization (WHO) limits. This was done by analyzing the contents of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn) in the samples after a wet digestion procedure, using a molecular absorption spectrophotometer. Results obtained showed their presence at very high and varying concentrations in different parts of the plants, with a majority above the WHO/FAO permissible limits. The average maximum levels obtained were in roots with 71.19±0.02 mg/kg (Justicia secunda), 40.00±0.05 mg/kg (Cleome ciliata), 16.90±0.03 mg/kg (Ageratum conyzoïdes), 14.97±0.04 (Ageratum conyzoïdes) and 10.32±0.03 (Justicia secunda), respectively for Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn and Cd. The concentrations were classified as followed in the leaves and roots: Cu>Pb>Cr>Zn>Cd; in the stems: Cu>Pb>Zn>Cd>Cr. Results suggest that heavy metals are unequally distributed in plant organs in the following order: roots>leaves>stems; in different habitats as: roadsides>refuse dumps>residential areas.
The harvesting of medicinal plants from the Douala region could be hazardous to humans. This metallic pollution might be due to the industrial activities, dense road traffic, in addition to high farming and inappropriate agriculture practices.

Abstract

More than half of the cancer patients in Western countries are using phytochemicals aiming to improve anti-cancer therapy and reduce chemotherapy induced toxicity. Indeed, a huge number of bioactive phytochemicals is available emphasizing the high need for predictive diagnostics. Two preclinical diagnostic models for herbal product testing are introduced, namely the 3D-microtumor model directly prepared from the patients tumor and the immune model generated from the PBMC of the individual patient. Phytochemicals, frequently recommended to cancer patients, have been tested as single agents and in combination therapy: amygdalin, apigenin, artesunate, curcumin, EGCG, hypericin, quercetin, resveratrol, silibinin, viscum and vitamin-C. In the 3D-microtumor model, in 80% of the patients at least one of the herbals revealed a direct anti-tumor effect (up to 35% of the cancer cells). In heavily pretreated palliative patients tumor inhibition induced by phytochemicals was comparable to the effect of further-line chemotherapy and molecular therapy. In addition, some of the natural substances such as curcumin, EGCG and vitamin-C function as chemosensitizer showing a substantial increase (up to 30%) of chemotherapeutic effects. In the immune model, phytochemicals induced both stimulation and inhibition of PBMC depending on the state of exhaustion of the patients immune cells. In some patients combination therapy with artesunate, EGCG and hypericin resulted in the reduction of chemotherapy induced hematoxicity. In summary, which of the many natural substances showed anti-tumoral efficacy and immune modulatory activity did vary depending on the individual cancer patient and therefore need to be tested in patient relevant models.

Venom therapy, as complementary and alternative medicine approach, has been used for thousands of years to treat inflammation, pain and arthritis in folk medicine. In recent years, various components have been used for drug development such as α-cobrotoxin, Alfimeprase, Cenderitide, Crotalphine derived from different snakes venom are in clinical trials for reliving chronic inflammation, pain & heart diseases. A well-known antihypertensive drug Captopril was isolated from the venom of Bothrops jararaca a South American snake. Pakistan cobra (Naja oxiana) belongs to lethal family of snakes. Neurotoxin I & II are considered as the main substance of cobra venom which is responsible to modulate the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR). Some peptides of therapeutic value have been identified from this cobra venom such as cytotoxin I & II having anticancer activity. Based on these evidences, in current study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory action of Naja oxiana venom on rodent model of inflammation.
The anti-inflammatory property of native Naja oxiana venom was determined at (0.018µg) followed by measurement of inflammatory mediators ([tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukins IL-1 and -6]) using carrageenan induced peritonitis via ELISA and ROS Levels by 2′, 7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) dye method. The Naja oxiana venom suppressed the IL-6 & ROS levels ̴ 18% comparable to Diclofenac Sodium (25mg) & there was 0% mortality rate observed.
In conclusion, Naja oxiana venom have potency to reduce the inflammation by attenuating of inflammatory cytokines, therefore, it needs to be further investigate for their toxicity profile and its anti-inflammatory effects at cellular and molecular level. Further studies are also in process to isolate its purified form which may play important role in development of new anti-inflammatory drug.

Leila Khalaj is a Pharm D., and has completed her PhD in Pharmacology from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, and postdoctoral studies from Neuroscience Research Center of Shahid Beheshti University and Eskitis Institute of Griffith University. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Our previous articles showed that suppressive or preventive treatment with the herbal Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin reduced the number and duration of genital herpes outbreaks with no adverse effects. These studies also revealed that the herbal Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin is mostly superior to acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir drugs in genital herpes. This study tested the effect of Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin in oral herpes (also called cold sores and fever blisters).
RESULTS: Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin was effective in 89.3% of participants. The treatment reduced the mean number of outbreaks per year from 6.0 and 3.6 in the control groups to 2.0 in the treatment group ( P < .0001 and P = .07, respectively). Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin reduced the mean duration of outbreaks from 9.8 and 5.8 days in the control groups to 3.2 days in the treatment group ( P < .0001 and P = .02, respectively). There were no reports of adverse experiences. Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin was compared to acyclovir and valacyclovir in 6 tests. In all tests, Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin showed higher efficacy. Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin also showed superior safety.
CONCLUSIONS: This clinical study showed that suppressive or preventive treatment with the herbal Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin reduced the number and duration of outbreaks in oral herpes without any adverse effects. The study also showed that the herbal Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin had better clinical effects than acyclovir and valacyclovir, the leading drugs in the category. Based on these results, we recommend using the herbal Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin as preventive treatment for oral herpes and, specifically, as an alternative to the acyclovir and valacyclovir drugs.

Hanan Polansky is the director of the Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD). Polansky received his PhD on Computational Models of Intuition from the Hebrew University in Israel. He then worked at Cornell University, and the University of Rochester. Polansky wrote the book: Microcompetition with Foreign DNA and the Origin of Chronic Disease. Polansky is also the developer of the psycholinguistic-based data-mining program called Computer Intuition. The program uncovers the intuition of scientists hiding in scientific papers. Polansky is using Computer Intuition in in uncovering surprising relationships hiding in the scientific literature.

Energy drinks appear to be similar to soft drinks – rather innocuous. However, they are different in some respects and can be quite harmful to one’s health, particularly those of young people. It has been found that energy drinks can cause such as increased heart rate, chest pain, racing heart and high blood pressure. Huge amounts of money are spent on advertising these products and the average person is likely unaware of their potential negative effects.
This presentation will discuss the health ramifications of energy drink consumption, including a traditional medicine perspective. It will then briefly discuss the laws regarding their consumption in different countries.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Marilyn commenced work as a freelance journalist for Canada's largest newspaper, later she created her own magazine, On the Wall and commenced working as a television producer at matrix productions in Toronto. Abstract

Though a large number of synthetic medicines are available even then due to strong safety profiles the plant based medicines are still extensively used for the treatment of various pathological conditions. present work was aimed to investigate the antioxidant, antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory potential of the n-Hexane extract of Teucrium stocksianum Bioss (HETS).
Phytochemical evaluation revealed the presence of flavonoids saponins, anthraquinone steroids and tannins. HETS has shown profound antioxidant potential and displayed 72.9% and 87.35% activity at 100 µg/ml and 250 µg/ml in DPPH and H2O2 assay, respectively. The extract contained 76.10 and 27 mg/g total phenolic contents (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC), respectively. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of HETS were evaluated at 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight, while acute toxicity was observed at 1500 mg/kg body weight in various groups of mice. In acetic acid pain paradigm, the extract exhibited significant (**P ˂ 0.001) and dose dependent analgesic activity and has shown 74.57% at 300 mg/kg, body weight. While the extract remained ineffective in tail immersion tests and could only raise the thermal thresh hold up to 11.6% at a dose of 300 mg/kg after 60 min of the test dose. In carrageenan induced paw edema test HETS displayed (58.1%) anti-inflammatory effects at a dose of 300 mg/kg that remained persistent till 5th h. HETS was found safe in acute toxicity test at 1500 mg/kg body weight. Thus, it could be concluded that, HETS exhibited profound antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and peripheral analgesic effects at all test doses.

Food security is an integral part of our future. The Environmental Working Group discovered our food demands will double by year 2050. The search is on to find and/or create crops which can withstand any environmental issues, whether that be climate change or herbicides. Genetically modified organisms (GMO) were created to withstand these types of issues and help global food security. They are not only used in the US but around the world. One would think it is an agricultural gain, however, evidence has been piling up against GMOs and their health effects. The question arises, are GMOs and Roundup a huge concern for our health? In August 2018, Monsanto, one of the lead companies creating GMOs and Roundup, lost a trial against Dewayne Johnson, a 46-year-old gardener who is diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Leukemia after constant exposure to pesticides. If such a disease can arise from GMOs and Roundup, what other health effects/diseases can they produce on the body? In this presentation, I’d like to bring light to the biochemical, genetic, and agricultural issues GMOs and Roundup can bring to our future.

Abstract

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum L.) is one of the oldest traditional medicinal plants. Fenugreek belongs to the family of Leguminosae and is used as an herb or spice. This study aims to evaluate the side effects germinated seeds of fenugreek in fetal development and evaluation of locomotive development. An aqueous extract of sprouted fenugreek seeds is administered to mated female mice throughout pregnancy at doses of 200, 500, 800, 1000 mg/kg/day. The fetuses have been weighed and their behavior is evaluated. In pregnant mice, there were no obvious symptoms of toxicity, deaths related to the aqueous extract of sprouted fenugreek seeds. The progeny of the mice includes an increase in the body weight of the fetus and a reduction in their motor coordination. This study suggests that prenatal mouse exposure to high doses of aqueous extract of germinated fenugreek seeds may lead to toxic effects on mouse reproduction as well as impaired neurobehavioral performance in fetuses.

Ayurveda, the oldest system of medicine deals with the preventive, promotive and curative aspects of life through its holistic approach. People throughout the world is being drawn towards alternative systems of medicine. Shalya Tantra the specialized branch of Ayurveda deals with different aspects of para surgical procedures particularly Kshara is employed with great success in many conditions where other remedial measures found ineffective. Kshara has properties like excision, Scraping, Cauterization, Debridement and especially Cutting and Healing simultaneously without a surgical excision. Hence Sushruta the Father of Indian Surgery has described the uses of Kshara in many diseases like Bhagandara (Fistula in ano), Sinus (Nadi vrana), Utsanmasan (Hypertrophoid wound), Arsha (Haemorrhoid), Amarman Granthi (Warts), Arbuda (Tumor). Considering the unique characteristics of Kshara, ancient seers developed and practiced Ksharasutra (Ayurvedic medicated thread). Ksharasutra an alkaline medicated thread is made with Turmeric powder, Latex of Euphorbia and alkaline ash of Achyranthes aspera. Ksharasutra is a minimal invasive Para surgical measure for a number of pathological manifestations. This measure is now validated and established its superiority over conventional operative measure in anorectal fistulae. The disease is widely prevalent and various treatment modalities are available but still none of them provide solace to the suffering humankind. Even today in spite of leaps and bounds advancement in the field of surgery still the disease poses a challenge to the surgeons. But Ksharasutra an ancient treatment modality proved its superiority in Fistula in ano and In many other diseases in present era.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a major cause of pain and functional limitation worldwide, treated by medical, physical, or surgical intervention with no single definite effective treatment. In patients in whom standard medical practice is ineffective and who are not candidates for surgery (or who reject it), other pain management procedures, as acupuncture should be considered. The aim of our study was to determine the efficacy of acupuncture for treatment of OA of the knee. We conducted a randomized, controlled trial with blinded evaluation and statistical analysis of results. It was carried out at the Physical Medicine Department, Mansoura University Hospital, Egypt, over a period of two years. Sixty patients were randomly assigned and instructed to stop all treatment and only paracetamol was allowed for 2 weeks when patient followed weekly. Patients were divided into three groups each is of 20 patients; an intervention group treated with acupuncture plus manual needle stimulation (group I), second intervention group had electric stimulation (group II), and a control group given sham acupuncture (group III).Treatment were given twice weekly for 8 weeks, then stopped for other 5 weeks, when patients were followed on weekly basis. Our results showed that patients in group I, II and III reported improvement of their pain, stiffness, and function domains of the WOMAC score, VAS and CI (clinical index) total. Regarding the safety of acupuncture for treatment of knee OA, we found that it is a safe and well tolerated modality with negligible adverse effects.

Amal Fehr is currently a lecturer of physical medicine, faculty of medicine Helwan University, Egypt. She was graduated from faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Egypt in 1990, she had master degree in Physical medicine from same faculty year 2002 and had Doctorate Degree in physical medicine year 2009 from same faculty with thesis titled Acupuncture in treatment of Knee osteoarthritis (immunological view). Fehr had traditional Chinese courses in Shanxi TCM College, China in 2002 and had TCM course in Beijing, China in 2013 for professionals then had again TCM course in Beijing in 2014, China, at Chinese academy of traditional Chinese medical sciences. Fehr was a speaker in many local and international medical conferences and acted as a chairperson in some of them.She has published papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member of repute.

Abstract

Iran owns one of the most influential ancient forms of traditional medicines. The medical history of Iran dates back to thousand years ago. Unfortunately, sometimes this medical system with such a great history is neglected due to its weak presence in the world of research. That’s while Rhazes (10th century AD, who wrote al-hawi fi al-tibb) and Avecinna (11th century AD, who wrote Canon of Medicine) are the two famous Iranian scholars whose books were translated and taught as the main text in Western universities until 17th century.
Iranian Traditional medicine is a branch of elemental medicine which is established based on the four elements theory. This theory is designed in eastern civilizations. India, China and Iran had the most famous traditional medicines. Vedas belong to 600- 1750 BC and inner canon of the yellow emperor (Chinese book of traditional medicine) was written in about 200-400 BC. About Iran, the concept of elements can be traced in Zoroastrian teachings (1768 BC). That’s while hyppocratic medicine belongs to 460 BC. The first medical centers such as Jondi Shapur university and hospital were also established in Iran. Hereby, many aspects of Iranian traditional medicine along with its relevance to Unani medicine are discussed. Finally, it is suggested that the names be used correctly and not interchangeably.

Abstract

Background: In many developing countries the products of socio-cultural medicine are more used in primary health care by low income populations. The economic crises, the slump in agricultural products and the significant increase in the population are at the origin of the strong dependence on the care of local therapists. Thus medicinal plants become the source of treatment of many people in self-medication of at the local therapists’.
Objective: The objective of this present study was to follow diabetic patients using medicinal plants to control their hyperglycemic or the complications of diabetes in Cameroon. it's about collecting and documenting information on herbal remedies traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes in Cameroon.
Methods: To achieve this objective, data were collected from 182 clinical followed up patients, who have been diagnosed at least once by a physician as diabetic patients in hospital. Diabetic patients involved in this work had personal glucometer, signed the informed consent, and allowed us to evaluate the effectiveness of medicinal plants that they usually used in self-medication and/or at local therapists’ for a period of ten days. These medicinal plants were prepared in form of decoction, maceration, powder and infusion. The quantity of vegetal material; the volume of the solvent (water), the time of preparation, the cases of plants association were took in consideration for ethno pharmacological standardization of posology. One glass (250 ml) was administered orally twice or three times daily. The control was realized using patients’ glucometers.
Results: 70% of patients who used plants were relieved at the end of the treatment. Thirteen plants were recorded and documented for the treatment of diabetes. Conclusion: The results of this study can stimulate a sustainable development by providing the basis for drugs discovery and by documenting biodiversity for long time exploitation.

Tsabang Nolé has completed his PhD at the age of 48 years from Yaounde 1 University. He is first author and co-author of 25 and 39 articles respectively, and principal investigator of 4 books edited by Heifer International Project Cameroon. Besides Biodiversity research, Dr Tsabang Nolé teaches Ecology, Ecophysiology, Ethnobotany, Ethnopharmacology, Environmental sciences, Agroforestry, Sustainable development and Traditional medicine, at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, at the University of Dschang and at the Higher Institute of Environmental Sciences as visiting lecturer. Abstract

Aromatherapy is the science of using aromatic plant extracts and essential oils for healing purposes. Aromatherapy and different methods of applying good-smelling material were mentioned in Iranian books. Evidence of using Aromatherapy goes back to ancient Iranian civilization.
Mentioning aromatherapy in non-medical texts, probably implies its wide use among ancient Iranian people and being a part of culture. A strong evidence showing this use is Shahnameh (the famous long epic poem which is a unique masterpiece written by Ferdowsi in 4th and 5th AD) that contains important notes regarding Iranian traditional medicine. There, various styles of aromatherapy and related purposes are mentioned. Also, remnants of this culture are still seen in some traditions and rituals of different religions. The holy book of Zoroastrians named Avesta had five parts one of which is Vendidad. This religious text in Avestan language which dates back to many years ago, mentions ways of using the aroma of plants.
From traditional medicine viewpoint, Avecinna (known physician of Iranian traditional medicine in 4th century) mentioned the way of distillation and extracting essential oils. His first experience was with rose. Xneophon mentions that Iranian people were the most perfume consumers. Also, Will Durant names Iranian people as the first perfume manufacturers. Persepolis stone inscriptions (related to Achaemenid dynasty, 400 years BC) show Iranians’ interest in aromas and perfumes. The aromatherapy evidences of ancient Iranian resources are reviewed in this article.

Abstract

Every medical tradition is founded on a certain conception of the human body. This idea of the body is important for understanding a culture’s conception of illness, physician-patient relationship, and quality of care. In an increasing multicultural world, with rapid international migration, understanding different cultural perspectives of disease is indispensable for improvement of physician patient relationship and quality of care. Sharing methods of treatment may also help improve health care globally. In this paper, I engage in a comparative analysis of the biomedical model, the prevailing model of the body in (modern Western) medicine today, with the eco-bio-communitarain model, the predominant, but uncharted model of body in African Traditional Medicine. According to the biomedical model, all illness and all symptoms and signs arise from an underlying dysfunction within the body. Health is simply the absence of these symptoms. With the biomedical model, the physician is trained to see illness essentially as an aggregation of physical signs and symptoms which define a particular disease. According to the eco-bio-communitarian model, the patients is viewed as part of an interconnected and unified system such that once a feature of this system is affected, the whole or part of the structure is affected. With eco-bio-communitarian model, health is harmony of all facets reality--natural, supernatural, moral, and social framework of society and disease is the result of a dysfunction of disharmony.

Mbih Jerome Tosam holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Yaounde I (2011). He is currently Chair of Philosophy at the faculty of Arts of the University of Bamenda. His doctoral thesis was in the filed of bioethics, but his research interests include philosophy of medicine, African philosophy, moral and social philosophy. He has published more than 10 papers in reputed national and international journals.
